History of Island Cottage
It was first a dream, then a concept and finally a reality by combining the luxuries, warmth & intimacy of a fine B & B … the privacy, spaciousness and amenities of a quiet beachfront home … and the gardens, fountains and ambiance of a small but exquisite Caribbean resort.
In 1992, Toni and Mark Treworgy left all other pursuits to follow Toni’s dream of designing and building a romantic oceanfront boutique inn in quaint, “old Florida” Flagler Beach.
Island Cottage Oceanfront Inn was born… encompassing eight private villas with fireplaces, Jacuzzi tubs, kitchens, cathedral ceilings and spectacular ocean views. Keeping with the Caribbean theme, each villa has been named after a beautiful, tropical island destination, and has been accented with seashells, colorful fabrics and comfortable furnishings reminiscent of the Islands with the music of steel drums & Hawaiian guitar often playing softly in the background.
Keeping conservation of our planet’s resources in mind, Island Cottage incorporates a complex irrigation and drainage plan designed to keep the Xeriscape tropical flora and herb garden lush and green with minimal care and watering. Furthermore, a detailed, well thought out decorative lighting schematic was designed to bring soft, romantic, energy efficient lighting to the courtyard and walkways during the nighttime hours. Additionally, installation of solar panels as an efficient heat source for the swimming pool and an “Energy Star Rated” roofing system was completed. In 2007, Island Cottage received the classification as a “GREEN LODGE” – number 42 in the state of Florida to be awarded this prestigious and forward-thinking designation.
In January 2019, Mark & Toni partnered with their dear friends Wolf and Maureen, a former Palm Coast based couple hired back in 2002 for the Inn’s catered wedding events. The four had become very good friends during those early years so were extremely excited about their new partnership. By the end of September, Wolf and Maureen moved to the inn and are now the full-time innkeepers.
Within seven months of opening, Island Cottage was singled out as one of Florida’s top 10 inns by world renowned travel writer, Herb Hiller. More recently, the Inn has received the designation as one of the 5 best Florida Inns by Florida Living Magazine & the industry’s “White Glove” award by Superior Small Lodging.
The most recent of honors include being chosen as a “Select Registry – Distinguished Inns of North America” Property (since 2007), …
One of the “TOP 10 HIDDEN GEMS” in the United States – awarded by Trip Advisor, … and in 2013, …
One of the “Top 10 Most Romantic Inns in the WORLD” out of over 13,000 inns world-wide! (bedandbreakfast.com)
Island Cottage’s Green Practices also gained recognition by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection who awarded Island Cottage with a Green Award for their environmental efforts – # 42 in the State to receive this award.
A Bit About Toni
Toni learned to read blueprints since the tender age of four, a skill which helped her design Island Cottage. Formerly, a well-known vocalist and performer in the New York metropolitan area, her musical accomplishments have earned numerous awards.
Toni’s most recent projects include an autobiography/memoir about her compelling, uplifting and often spiritual journey through life. Much about the beginnings of the inn are documented in her memoir. You can locate her book on Amazon under “The Ebbing Tide” by Toni Treworgy.
You will find Toni’s artwork throughout the inn, mostly watercolors depicting land and seascapes of serene & tranquil coves, beaches, rivers and marshlands. The inn’s gift shop also features her memoir, CD’s and cookbook. Prints of her artwork are available for purchase.
A Bit About Mark
Mark learned boat building while volunteering at New York’s South Street Seaport. In 1979, he moved to Florida where he founded his own metal ship building yard. There he designed and built numerous custom sailing vessels and motor yachts. Mark’s custom-built sailboats and yachts are up to 100 foot in length and are mostly seen along coastal New England, in the Great Lakes region, in Florida’s tropical waters or cruising the Caribbean. Mark’s hobbies include antique car restoration, woodworking and boat building.
Mark’s project, “Miss Lola” a wooden Bahamian Dinghy was designed, built and launched in the Island Cottage swimming pool during a fun filled Caribbean party. Miss Lola was sold to a family in the area who sails her on the Intracoastal waterway.
Mark’s most recent project is the construction of a 44’, all aluminum yacht that is nearing completion.
